The world's largest container ship has been completed and launched on its maiden voyage

The world's largest container ship has set sail on its maiden voyage from China. The HMM Algeciras, sailing out of the port of Chingtao, has a capacity of 24,000 TEUs and can carry three and a half football pitches.

The new cargo carrier can carry 200 more containers than the largest such vessel to date. When full, it can carry up to 24,000 containers, which would cover 150 kilometres...

The ship is 339.9 metres long and 61.03 metres wide, with a deck area of 24,000 square metres.

The Algercirast was launched in South Korea, arrived empty in Chingtao on Sunday morning, where it was loaded and set sail on its maiden voyage in the afternoon. It is now carrying only 4,560 containers of chemicals, electronics and non-perishable foodstuffs to Pusan in South Korea.

In addition to Asia, the container ship will also transport goods via the Suez Canal to Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp and London.
